All About Time Blocking

There is a famous quote from French Author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, that reads, “A dream without a plan is just a wish.” When it comes to time management, no truer words have been spoken. Each year we are presented with 365 days, 8,760 hours, and 525,600 minutes to build a life but, how much of that time is actually used to work on our dreams? Need a solution? Try time blocking.

Time blocking is a way to break your day into blocks of of time as you assign tasks to each time slot. Time blocking is not something new, in fact Wikipedia states time blocking has been around since the Bronze Age, a period that lasted from 3300 BC to 1200 BC. Notably Benjamin Franklin was one of the most avid users of time blocking, mapping everything out from his morning rinse right down to his evening supper. Noteworthy modern time blockers include Bill Gates and Elon Musk. Now pause and imagine what your 2024 can look like by trying time blocking next year.

  1. Make a list: Begin by listing all of your tasks. Sound overwhelming? Take a deep breath and break it down by category. Try these categories as you begin: work, home, health, and goals.
