ReFRAME Your Thoughts and Your Routine!
When traveling across different time zones, we often experience jet lag, as our circadian rhythm is disrupted and we adapt to new geographic locations. Research shows that jet lag can lead to elevated cortisol levels and increased stress. In addition, frequent travelers have higher rates of insurance claims for psychological issues, infectious diseases, back disorders, and injuries than nontravelers. This is precisely why we must strive for balance when our schedule takes us away and release an all-or-nothing attitude. When we fluctuate between extremes, we miss opportunities to create inner peace and experience feelings of shame and lower self-esteem. Summer is the perfect season to surrender your all-or-nothing ways and embrace what you can do with where you are!
All-or-nothing thinking is also referred to as dichotomous thinking, and when we find ourselves creating a world that is black or white, we must step back and allow space for acceptance. When planning vacations, we are at the mercy of the weather, airlines, and fellow travelers. While there is little that we can do about an extended layover or missing connecting flight, we can release our need for things to be perfect and surrender to the rhythm of what is happening around us.
Reframing is a technique for identifying automatic thoughts and replacing them with more balanced ones. By identifying distorted and negative thoughts, we can break cycles of frustration, stress, and anxiety. At its core, reframing is a way to view negative situations through a more positive lens. By reframing, we empower ourselves and reconceptualize perceived problems more positively. When traveling and working out, we must reframe an all-or-nothing mindset that freezes our routine and adapt to our newfound temporary schedule. Below are everyday thoughts you may encounter this summer and a reframed perspective designed to keep you on track!
